Selecting and Interrogating Map Features

Many of the map features can be selected to view data about them and access other interactive functions.

Selecting Map Features

Individual map features are selected by clicking with the left mouse button.

A pin icon  indicates the last selected point, the coordinates of this point are displayed, and the selected map feature (if any) is highlighted.

Click Clear Selection  on the Command Bar to remove all features from the selection.

Single Select is the default selection option. This will let you select a single point on the map. All items at that location (from switched on layers) will be selected, not just the topmost visible layer.

The following advanced selection options with the ability to select multiple features are accessed from the Command Bar. Click for more information.

Multi-SelectMulti-Select

Left click on a series of features to select them all.

Clicking on features adds to the selection, instead of replacing the previous selection.

Area SelectArea Select

Selects all features within a rectangular area defined by the user.

Left click to define one corner of the rectangle then left click again to select the opposite corner of the rectangle and define the area.

Poly-SelectPoly-Select

Selects all features within a user defined polygon.

Left click at a series of points to define the vertices of the polygon.

Double click on the final point to 'close' the polygon.

Buffer SelectBuffer Select

Selects all features within a defined distance of a user defined line (all features within the black dashed line shown below).

Left click at a series of points to define the vertices of the line.

Double click on the final point to finish the line.

The buffer distance can be changed using the dialogue box.

When using Area Select and Poly-Select features which cross the boundary will be included within the selection. Holding Control on the keyboard while defining the region will constrain the Area Select region to a square, or constrain the Poly-Select shape to orthogonal edges.

Interrogating Map Features

When a map feature is selected it will be highlighted on the map and a dialogue box will appear giving a summary of the feature.

If selecting a GAD object, you will be able to click View Details in the dialogue box to view detailed information about the object. Pressing View details will open up the object's details page in a new browser tab.

The dialogue box can be docked to the side of the main window by pressing the  button. This will fix the box in the top right corner of the screen. If docked, press the button to undock the dialogue box.

Where multiple features are selected you can cycle through them using the arrow buttons in the dialogue box . The object with details shown in the dialogue box will be highlighted in orange on the map. Changing details with the arrow buttons will change which object is highlighted on the map.
