Using the Legend

The mapping layers which are available within the system are summarised in the Mapping catalogue.

The Legend allows control over which layers are being displayed on the map, and provides a key for how to interpret the various colours and symbols displayed.

The legend features are:

  1. Selecting layers - Layers are turned on and off by selecting the tick boxes  next to each layer name.

  2. Layer grouping - Similar mapping layers are grouped, often in several levels, with lists initially collapsed in the legend to save space. To expand or collapse a group click the  icon next to the name. To make a layer turn on, all groups above must also be turned on.

  3. Layer zoom levels - Some layers cannot be viewed at low zoom levels and are greyed out when unavailable. These layers will become available to switch on when zoomed in.

  4. Key - The legend also includes a key to the colours and symbols used to represent the layer on the map. The key is only available on some layers, certain layers in GDMS do not have a key in the legend.

  5. Text Filter - The text filter is used to find a specific layer. Only layers or groups which contain the filter term in their name (exact match of phrase) will be displayed.

  6. Legend Buttons - Buttons with predefined functions that can be 'toggled' on and off by repeatedly clicking. These allow you to perform the following actions:

    1.   Collapse All - Collapses all currently expanded groups.

    2.  Filter to visible layers - Only map layers which are 'turned on' are shown.

    3. Filter to available layers - Only map layers which are available at the current zoom level are shown.
